Connecting Letters
In cursive writing, there are three different kinds of letters. And guess what? Each type has its very own cool way of connecting. How awesome is that?
TALL letters use TALL looping connection strokes. These strokes go up diagonally in front of the tall letter and then loop back at the top, where the letter actually begins.
ROUND letters use ROUND curving connection strokes.
SHORT letters use SHORT connection strokes that go directly to the beginning of the next letter.
The following presentation shows how connection strokes help you write each word using a single line. Letters are connected like beads on a string.
As you begin to learn an unfamiliar writing concept, one simple trick that can actually help is to lift your pointer finger and try spelling out words in the air. It may sound silly, but fingerspelling can really help you grasp the big idea.
Check out the cursive alphabet below! See how the little lines that connect the letters start from the bottom and go up? Some letters have big loops, some have round curves, and some have short lines. Cool, right?
Fingerspell each of these letters to get the feel of them.
When you add a connecting stroke to the first letter of a word, it is just for looks. You should skip writing these unnecessary strokes to keep it simple.
Make sure you can spell out everything with your finger before you start.
